The Roadmap to Beautiful and Meaningful Data

Too often businesses and individuals approach data as solely a technology problem, throwing good money after bad by chasing buzzwords, new solutions, and new hires in an attempt to operationalize their data. Unfortunately, to really gain the most from your data, whether that’s operationalizing it, monetizing it, or using it as a means to barter, you have to look at what makes data powerful. Context, reusability, and people are key to maximizing the impact of your data. This session will explore how you can implement tools and processes in a way that can take your data from inaccessible, meaningless, and obscure to truly beautiful.

Time Pieces: The Temporal Analytics Jigsaw

Tableau can perform simple temporal analytics when time is viewed as a simple binnable scalar, but more complex tasks require sophisticated level-of-detail calculations or even baroque data preparation flows. This prevents ordinary users from performing analytic tasks like counting the number of employee workdays per fiscal year. Moreover, the queries needed for such tasks are notoriously slow. This session proposes temporal analytic components that can help extend the Tableau drag-and-drop interface to support a wider range of temporal questions. Recently published database technologies for windowing and inequality joins demonstrate that the required queries are becoming tractable. Putting these pieces together produces a vision of how to extend Tableau to perform sophisticated temporal analytics with minimal user effort.

UnitedHealth Group: Delivering Statistical Controls and Performance Insights at Scale

With the exponential rate at which firms acquire and store data today, it can become all too easy to get lost in data. Typically, we see operations aggregate that data and measure performance against a set of targets. Doing so at scale can be challenging and we often see traffic light dashboards simplifying past results without looking for signals in the data serving as precursors to future performance. In this session you’ll learn about statistical process controls (SPC), how to visualize SPC charts in Tableau, how to identify and highlight signals, and how to bring it all together in a simple, easy to understand dashboard, all while respecting existing business targets and support data-driven decision making.

User Group: Healthcare

Do you enjoy data? Check. How about Tableau? Check. Are you interested in healthcare? Check. Do you want to improve your visualization skills? Absolutely. Lindsay Betzendahl, the founder of #ProjectHealthViz, will share how you can get involved in a community visualization project aimed to help you practice your Tableau skills with healthcare data. You will learn how #ProjectHealthViz started, how participating can benefit your career, and how you can join a community of passionate healthcare data geeks! You’ll then have the opportunity to learn how HealthDataViz tackled the common challenge of making data available, beautiful and informative by revamping NYC's public health data website. Every month, more than 1,000 people visit NYC Epiquery (Epidemiology + Query) to access public health survey, vital records and surveillance data, and related information. However, the site was outdated, fragmented, and difficult to use. They used persona development, guided analytics, best practices of data visualization and Tableau to completely transform the data application. They made the most of Tableau by employing action filters, parameters, Javascript API and R-integration to create functionality such as a statistical testing tool and links to related resources. The result is a seamless, easy-to-use and high-impact application with custom reports customized for the novice to the advanced user. In addition to revamping the Epiquery website, we also redesigned the Community Health Profiles, resulting in interactive, print-friendly and engaging overviews of each community in New York City.

Visualize Gender Equality – Harnessing the power of data visualization to highlight gender inequality and fuel global action.

The Visualize Gender Equality project was developed by Operation Fistula, a charity working to end obstetric fistula for every woman, everywhere. Women with fistula live in places where the burden of gender inequality is at its most extreme. Where the spectrum of injustices they face are most profound. We believe that if obstetric fistula is prevalent, so too is extreme gender inequality. Obstetric fistula is therefore a profoundly effective indicator of systemic failure. Using Tableau and Exasol, the project will drive forward new data collaborations and spur collective impact, advocacy, and action to end gender inequality. By visualizing data on the extreme inequities that plight women and girls, we can build a better picture of the system failures and vulnerabilities that perpetuate this injustice and implement more targeted interventions to end it. This project will engage the online Tableau community and the Makeover Monday platform and user groups, in addition to working across social media to leverage further global engagement and collaboration."

Visualizing What's Next: Using Dataiku ML and Tableau to Display Predictive Analytics

The power of Tableau is that it puts powerful tools into the hands of people all across your organization to access and see what is happening in your data. From marketing to operations and finance, if the data is out there, it can be grabbed and displayed in powerful charts and maps. The challenge, as any business intelligence expert will tell you, is that charts can only show you what happened, and no one drives a car looking only in the rear-view mirror. Dataiku, working closely with Tableau, can solve that problem by augmenting your data in a very powerful way. In this session, the topic of creating simple to complex ML, whether you’re an expert data scientist or new to the field, can add rich new insights and predictive capabilities to your data that can then be deployed within Tableau as data-rich charts and maps.
