Stop Building Custom Admin Views the Hard Way. Just Stop.

Every Tableau Server administrator has questions about their Tableau Server, and many try to build their own custom admin views to answer them. If that's you, then STOP RIGHT THERE! Before you join a single table or drop a single pill, come to this session and learn how to use our set of pre-built Tableau Server data sources. Once you do, you'll be answering questions at light speed, and helping your users to do the same. We've done all the work for you. Don't do it yourself!

Storytelling with Science: Communicating Complex Data Using Design Solutions

Science communication projects range in scale from the astronomical to the microscopic. As a science designer, I’ve created a map of 18,000 asteroid orbits, illustrated the development of human embryos, and set paper sculptures on fire to visualize California wildfires. Although the themes and techniques are vastly different, each project revolves around three major goals: evaluating data, understanding the audience, and combining both interpretations to share important science stories. In this session I’d like to talk about some of these overarching challenges and opportunities in science communication, including solutions for messy data, designing for different audiences, and developing a cohesive design style for expansive projects.

Storytelling: How Brands Can Benefit from Social Media Analytics

Social media is a growing communication platform, so there is a growing emphasis by brands to engage customers with it. But not many marketers fully understand, leverage and optimize social media for their company's marketing efforts. They may lack the data to fully appreciate what or why their customers are reacting to their social contents. In order to understand what their customers are saying about the brand, they need to dig deeper into the data to understand the story behind the metrics such as reach, likes, engagement or number of followers. This session will share practical tips and case studies on how you can use data to develop a successful social media marketing strategy for your company.

The 13 Types of Displays That Are All (Unfortunately) Called Dashboards

Is it O.K. to put filters on dashboards? Should all dashboards “tell a story”? Does everything need to fit on one screen? Experts have been arguing over these and many other basic dashboard design best practice questions for years. After designing dashboards for over 50 large organizations, I now believe that much of this controversy arises from the fact that people use “dashboard” to refer to at least 13 fundamentally different types of information displays –without realizing it. By proposing a taxonomy of dashboard types and recognizing that most "dashboard design best practices" only apply to a few of those types, we can move past much of the controversy and have far more productive dashboard design best practices discussions.
