PEMCO Insurance: Shifting Mindsets and Driving Adoption in the Claims Department

PEMCO Insurance is a northwest company providing auto, home, and boat insurance to our neighbors since 1949. In this session, you will hear how PEMCO’s VP of claims, claims business intelligence analyst, and Tableau subject matter expert combined a visionary strategy with business acumen, and technical expertise to pave the way for an initial success and many subsequent successes, ultimately transforming the Claims Department from a data desert into an analytics powerhouse where 83% of employees view dashboards monthly, 63% view weekly, and 21% view daily.

PolicyLink: Integrating Data to Win Greater Economic Rights and Opportunities for College Athletes

The large majority of college athletes, even those on scholarships, live below the federal poverty line. But unlike other students, college athletes are barred from earning income by the NCAA. In the case of football and basketball, this prohibition comes in the face of college athletes, largely students of color, being the primary driving force behind a multibillion-dollar industry, in which everyone around them earns exorbitant salaries, like head coaches who are largely white, except the college athletes themselves. In California, the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color advocated for and won approval of the Fair Pay to Play Act that gives college athletes to right to earn compensation for the use of their name, image, or likeness. Join us to learn about how the Alliance’s advocacy and use of data to win greater economic rights and opportunities for college athletes and their families.

PolicyLink: Leveraging Data for Advocacy to Win Protections for Youth of Color in California Schools

Throughout the country, schools operate from a complex set of harsh disciplinary policies and practices that push youth out of school through a combination of suspensions, expulsions, and arrests. The data is clear: Youth of color and especially those with disabilities are more likely to be targeted, pushed out of school, and risk becoming system-involved. After nearly ten years of organizing by youth, the Fix School Discipline Coalition, PolicyLink and the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color in partnership with community-based organizations and advocates won approval to end these harmful discipline practices in California. This bill will permanently prohibit students from being suspended on the basis of “willful defiance” in grades 4 and 5 and bans those same suspensions for grades 6–8 for 5 years, building off of previous legislation to ban these suspensions for grades K-3. Join us to learn about this California campaign from leaders in the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color!
