Science communication projects range in scale from the astronomical to the microscopic. As a science designer, I’ve created a map of 18,000 asteroid orbits, illustrated the development of human embryos, and set paper sculptures on fire to visualize California wildfires. Although the themes and techniques are vastly different, each project revolves around three major goals: evaluating data, understanding the audience, and combining both interpretations to share important science stories. In this session I’d like to talk about some of these overarching challenges and opportunities in science communication, including solutions for messy data, designing for different audiences, and developing a cohesive design style for expansive projects.
